BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim’s quest for public financing should he decide to run for statewide office in Connecticut has suffered a setback.
The Connecticut Post (https://bit.ly/2pX6DVq ) reports that staff for the state’s elections watchdog turned down Ganim’s request to lift a ban barring officials convicted of crimes related to their office from participating in Connecticut’s Citizens’ Elections Program.
Ganim was re-elected as mayor of Connecticut’s largest city in 2015, five years he was released from prison on corruption charges.
Wednesday’s decision is now in the hands of the state Elections Enforcement Commission, which will make a ruling June 21.
Ganim says should the commission rule against him next month, he will likely take the matter to court. Ganim has not decided to seek statewide office, but says he is considering it.
