Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday he’s ready to turn over transcripts of President Trump’s meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as he mocked the news media furor in the U.S. over alleged intelligence sharing.
Mr. Putin said no secrets were shared at the meeting and said the U.S. suffered “political schizophrenia,” according to a report in RT, a Russian news outlet closely associated with the Kremlin.
“If the U.S. administration deems it possible, we are ready to provide the Senate and Congress with the transcript of the conversation between Lavrov and Trump,” Mr. Putin said at a press conference.
“We are seeing in the U.S. a developing political schizophrenia,” he said. “There is no other way I can explain the accusations against the acting U.S. president that he gave away some secrets to Lavrov.”
Russian officials said they did not have a recording of the meeting but did have a transcript.
Mr. Trump has come under intense criticism following a Washington Post report that he disclosed high-level classified information to Mr. Lavrov in a Oval Office meeting last week. The information allegedly included the source of intelligence about an Islamic State plot to blow up airliners with computer laptop bombs.
It inflamed criticism that Mr. Trump is reckless or possibly allied with Russia, feeding Democrats’ accusations that he colluded with the former Cold War foe to impact the 2016 presidential election.
White House officials have repeatedly said that no classified information was divulged. They also said that Mr. Trump had not been briefed on the sources or methods of intelligence gathering that have been cited in newspaper reports.
