Sen. Marco Rubio said Wednesday that he spoke with a person in the meeting between President Trump and Russian officials who said Mr. Trump didn’t compromise intelligence information.
“I didn’t just speak to the White House, I spoke to one of the people that was in that meeting, and they vehemently and repeatedly denied that the president said or did anything that would’ve compromised U.S. intelligence, its sources, its methods or our intelligence relationships around the world,” Mr. Rubio, Florida Republican, said on Fox News.
“There are no transcripts of the meeting. There are notes, and I would imagine at some point here fairly soon the White House should make those notes available to the appropriate committees,” he said.
Mr. Rubio did say he feels the allegations do need to be looked into, however, especially regarding the memo released Tuesday from former FBI Director James B. Comey that claims Mr. Trump asked Mr. Comey to stop looking into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
“I think these are important matters. Whether it’s this or the Comey news, and so before anybody rushes to judgment, we’re not going to base our opinions solely on a news article. I’m not saying the news articles are wrong, I’m not saying that they’re right, I’m saying that they raise an allegation that we have an obligation to look into them,” he said.
Mr. Rubio did say the White House needs a better approach to putting out information and explanations for happenings inside the administration.
“I think if the White House became more systematic in its approach to scheduling and messaging and the like, I think they would avoid some of the friction that you’re now seeing,” he said.
