Rep. Adam Kinzinger said Wednesday that a special prosecutor is needed in the investigation of the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, the first time he is calling for such action.

“I think it’s time that we look at the idea of an independent commission or special prosecutor. I’m not sure the best venue. But I think it’s time that we do whatever is necessary that when this is over, we give people confidence that either way, either way it goes, justice has been served,” Mr. Kinzinger, Illinois Republican, said on CNN.

Mr. Kinzinger said another investigation, separate from those in the House and Senate, was necessary after former FBI Director James B. Comey’s memo came out Tuesday saying President Trump asked him to stop looking into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

“When we begin to hear things like the potentially asking the FBI director to stop an investigation, this has raised real red flags on the level of serious. So we need honest, non-political answers,” he said.

Mr. Kinzinger said this goes beyond politics or elections.

“All we need is answers. This goes beyond what does 2018 or 2020 mean. This is about protecting at whatever level our system, our faith in our politicians and in our institutions no matter what,” he said.
