ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - State officials overseeing Atlantic City have hired a firm to handle the city’s trash and recycling collection, a move that angered some City Council members.
The Press of Atlantic City (https://bit.ly/2qnHbeN) reports state officials awarded a three-year, $7.2 million contract to Gold Medal Environmental. The decision came nearly three weeks after the council tabled a vote to outsource the service.
City administration officials say the move will save the cash-strapped city $1.1 million a year without necessitating layoffs.
But some council members have said they’ve never received an analysis comparing the contract to the cost of doing the service in-house.
New Jersey took over Atlantic City’s finances in November. State overseer Jeffrey Chiesa says the state did what was in the best interest of the city.
