SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 42-year-old Utah man has been charged with killing his stepfather and attacking his mother.

The Salt Lake Tribune (Tribune (https://tinyurl.com/k7mw248) reports David Erekson of Huntsville was arrested last week and charged on Monday with first-degree murder in the death of his 69-year-old stepfather, Roger Haven.

He’s also accused of assault resulting in the substantial bodily injury of his 72-year-old mother, Gundi McClarin.

Police say McClarin was on the phone reporting the assault of her husband when her son attacked her.

Sheriff’s deputies found Haven dead inside the house with stab wounds in his back and other injuries to his head, face and neck. A police report says investigators recovered a knife in the kitchen sink.

Erekson has asked a judge to appoint him a public defender before his initial court appearance scheduled May 25.
