RAEFORD, N.C. (AP) - Auditors say state investigators should look into overtime hours for 29 jailers and five deputies in an eastern North Carolina county.

Outside auditor Scott McKay told the Hoke County commissioners Monday night that the 34 employees of Sheriff Hubert Peterkin recorded more than 400 hours of overtime in a given year dating to 2012.

He says the district attorney and the State Bureau of Investigation should review the findings.

Peterkin said at a news conference that the findings show how a lack of funding and staff affect his department. He says commissioners can hire more deputies or pay more overtime.

The SBI has been looking into alleged time card fraud by county and sheriff’s employees since February, when it got a warrant to search the county’s administrative offices.
