PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police in Rhode Island say they released a teenager to a relative after arresting him only to arrest him again hours later on different charges.

Providence police Capt. Michael Correia told The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/2rgEIQX ) the 17-year-old was arrested the morning of May 12 and charged with trying to steal tires off a car. Two adults were also charged. The teen was then issued a summons and released to a relative.

Hours later, police were investigating a stolen car being advertised for sale on social media. They arranged to meet with the seller and say the same teenager showed up driving the stolen car.

He was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention facility.
