Rep. Mo Brooks said Monday he will run in Alabama’s special Senate election in December.

Mr. Brooks will challenge current Sen. Luther Strange, who was appointed by then-Gov. Robert Bentley after former Sen. Jeff Sessions was nominated as attorney general.

A number of other Republicans are strongly considering or have already jumped in the race, but Mr. Brooks would be considered a top contender to challenge Mr. Strange. The deadline to file is Wednesday.

The Republican primary is set for Aug. 15, with an expected runoff planned for Sept. 26.

Mr. Strange already has the backing of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Senate Leadership Fund, giving him a considerable amount of support for a senator that has held his seat for less than one year.
