CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon won’t rule out returning to politics in his first public appearance since being released from prison for corruption.
Multiple media organizations reported the Democrat was part of a Black Political Caucus forum for people considering running for public office. Cannon and two other former officials spent three hours on Saturday giving advice on fundraising, opposition research and making contacts.
Cannon didn’t address his 2014 guilty plea on federal corruption charges. He was charged after taking more than $50,000 in bribes, mostly from undercover FBI agents posing as out-of-town real estate developers. He was released from a federal prison in September.
Cannon’s probation ends in 2019. That’s when his right to vote and run for election returns. Charlotte city council elections are that also year.
