COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has backed the claim of John Patrick Walter’s family that in 2014 he died of prescription drug withdrawal in jail.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/2pD5O8b ) that Dr. Emily Berry had released a report April 17 stating Walter died as a result of not being given his daily dosage of the anxiety medicine Klonopin.
The new finding bolsters allegations in an ongoing federal lawsuit that Walter’s decline had been the result of medical neglect.
Walter had suffered delusions and lost 30 pounds in less than three weeks before his death at Fremont County jail. He had brought his prescriptions with him to the jail upon being booked on suspicion of felony assault.
Walter had been kept in a glass-walled observation cell in full view of numerous deputies.
