BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana Department of Corrections investigators have arrested a guard at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola after allegedly trying to smuggle drugs and other contraband into the facility.

The department says Saturday’s shakedown resulted in the arrest of 23-year-old April Matthews of Baton Rouge. She’s being held at the West Feliciana Parish Detention Center on charges of malfeasance in office, introduction of contraband into a penal institution and drug possession. Bond has not been set.

After her arrest, officials say Matthews resigned. She had worked at Angola since August.

Authorities say officers found in Matthews’ car 24 ecstasy pills, 2.6 ounces of marijuana, 9.08 ounces of synthetic marijuana, eight Xanax pills, 4.9 grams of methamphetamine, four Tylenol 3 pills, 16 cellphones, tobacco, rolling papers, phone chargers, and $511 in cash.
