SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) - State police are investigating the death of a 36-year-old man who was stricken while in the custody of an upstate New York police department.

Troopers have identified the victim as Andrew Kearse, who was stopped late Thursday afternoon in Schenectady for a traffic violation and apprehended after a brief chase on foot.

Police say Kearse complained of breathing problems and dizziness while riding in a patrol car and was unresponsive when he arrived at the police station. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and pronounced dead there.

State police Capt. Robert Patnaude tells the Albany Times Union the main goal of the investigation will be to pinpoint whether the death was natural, accidental, a homicide, or suicide.
