DETROIT (AP) - A $400,000 settlement will be shared by Detroit teachers who were laid off in 2011 and not properly recalled to work.
The Detroit Free Press reports (https://on.freep.com/2r0QT7C ) the settlement approved this week by the Detroit school district’s board ends a yearslong grievance.
Ivy Bailey, president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers union, says the union won in arbitration several years ago, but the money wasn’t paid because of questions about what teachers should be included.
The newspaper says the settlement affects 44 teachers. Bailey says the district called back people with less seniority, a violation of the teachers’ contract at the time.
Board member LaMar Lemmons says the state should pick up the cost, since the district was under control of a state-appointed emergency manager at the time.
