PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence city councilors have called for a special meeting to consider a vote of no confidence in the council president following his indictment.
Luis Aponte has been charged with embezzlement and misusing campaign finance funds. He pleaded not guilty Wednesday.
Seven of the 15 councilors requested the meeting on Friday, which is two more than required. They also plan to consider asking Aponte to give up his leadership role and resign as council president at Monday’s meeting.
They say they want to keep the city moving forward in a positive direction.
The group includes the council’s leadership team, besides Aponte.
An additional five councilors and Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza previously urged Aponte to resign.
Aponte couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Friday. His lawyer didn’t comment after the arraignment.
