Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday that he didn’t discuss with President Trump the “absurd” allegations that Russia interfered in the U.S. election.

“We discussed specific issues, and we didn’t even raise those absurd issues,” Mr. Lavrov told reporters at the Russian Embassy in Washington after his White House meeting.

He said he didn’t ask for assurances from Mr. Trump that the president discredits the accusations of Moscow’s interference. He said Mr. Trump has repeatedly dismissed the allegations already.

“That is why there is no need for him to tell us anything or to give us assurance behind closed doors,” Mr. Lavrov said.

He called the allegations “fake information” and said it must be “humiliating” for Americans to be subjected to news that a foreign country could interfere with the U.S. election system.

“How can it be possible for such a great power and great country?” Mr. Lavrov said of the U.S. “I believe that politicians are damaging the political system of the U.S., trying to pretend that someone is controlling America from the outside.”
