Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee Richard Burr said Wednesday that FBI Director James B. Comey’s firing will cause delays to his committee’s investigation, but will not deter them.
“We’ll deal with the fact that the president has made the decision. He has the full authority to do that, to have people he had confidence in. I respect that, but it doesn’t change the direction of this committee,” Mr. Burr told reporters on Capitol Hill.
The North Carolina Republican said the change in leadership at the FBI could delay his committee’s investigation into President Trump campaign’s ties to Russia if their access to documents or personnel is impeded.
“An interruption in any of the access that we have to documents and personnel would be harmful to our investigation,” Mr. Burr said.
But he said the investigation would continue on.
“I think these are all things that can be overcome if they present themselves as a problem,” Mr. Burr said. “Temporary delay possibly, but nothing that’s life threatening to our ability.”
Mr. Burr also said Mr. Trump called him Wednesday morning, but declined to elaborate further only noting the phone call was “pleasant.”
