RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The Rapid City school district’s paraprofessional employees recently voted overwhelmingly in favor of keeping their union intact.
The Rapid City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2pwkzoy ) that 98 percent of the 211 who voted last week cast ballots in favor of maintaining union representation through the Rapid City Education Association.
The Rapid City School Board sent a petition to the South Dakota Department of Labor late last year to decertify union representation for the district’s paraprofessionals. The union vote means paraprofessionals will keep their seat at the negotiating table.
Paraprofessionals assist teachers in the classroom by focusing on individual students who need extra academic help, often because they have special needs in the form of a developmental or learning disability.
