JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Alaska U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski calls the timing of James Comey’s firing as FBI director a “serious cause for concern.”
She says it comes during an investigation into Russian interference in last year’s presidential election.
Murkowski, a Republican, says President Donald Trump cited as a reason for Comey’s firing that Comey had lost the public’s trust.
In a statement, Murkowski says the job now is to restore that trust.
Murkowski spokeswoman Karina Petersen says Murkowski hasn’t indicated what she believes to be the best path forward in the investigation.
Alaska’s junior U.S. senator, Dan Sullivan, says investigations being conducted by the FBI and Senate need to continue and be free of political interference.
The Republican says the timing of Comey’s firing raises questions the Trump administration will need to answer.
