The Senate Intelligence Committee issued a subpoena for documents from former Trump Administration National Security Advisor Michael Flynn related to their investigation of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, according to a news release issued late Wednesday from committee chair Sen. Richard Burr.
In February the White House forced Mr. Flynn to resign after reports emerged that the retired army lieutenant-general lied to Vice President Mike Pence about pre-inauguration discussions on sanctions he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
According to Mr. Burr’s office, the Committee first requested these documents in an April 28 letter to Mr. Flynn.
Through his lawyer, Mr. Flynn declined to cooperate with the request.
On Monday, Obama-era acting Attorney General Sally Q. Yates testified before a Congressional investigation that she told Trump administration attorneys that Mr. Flynn could be blackmailed by Russia, weeks before he resigned.
In 2015, after retiring from the Defense Intelligence Agency, Mr. Flynn engaged in a trip to Moscow to participate in a gala anniversary celebration for Russia Today — commonly referred to as a Kremlin propaganda mouthpiece. He received roughly $33,000 for a 60-minute presentation given there.
