BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana lawmakers want the state’s top public school board to rewrite its plan for local school financing next year.
The House Education Committee on Wednesday rejected the $3.7 billion financing formula for the 2017-18 school year submitted by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Republican Rep. Nancy Landry, committee chair, said lawmakers want two provisions added to the formula. That includes language to assist districts impacted by last year’s flooding and to safeguard the Vernon Parish school district if it experiences a significant student enrollment decline from a military deployment at nearby Fort Polk.
The state education board scheduled a Thursday meeting to discuss updating next year’s formula with the requested language.
Lawmakers can only approve or reject the formula sent to them.
