AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine lawmakers are introducing a bill to recruit and train more immigrants for local businesses.

Sen. Roger Katz, R-Augusta, is requesting $2 million to create a cabinet-level New Mainers Office.

Katz says his bill will help immigrants learn English and the job skills to enter the state’s workforce. The bill also calls for another New Mainers Welcome Center in Lewistown.

Maine businesses have struggled to fill positions due to an aging population and a shrinking workforce.

The bill has received support from both Republicans and Democrats.
