FBI Director James B. Comey sent a letter to agents and friends Wednesday that declined to relitigate the public furors surrounding him over the past year or to detail what caused his firing.
“I have long believed that a President can fire an FBI Director for any reason, or for no reason at all. I’m not going to spend time on the decision or the way it was executed. I hope you won’t either. It is done, and I will be fine, although I will miss you and the mission deeply,” Mr. Comey wrote.
The letter was sent a day after Mr. Comey was suddenly fired from his post upon the recommendation of the top two men at the Justice Department over his handling of the Hillary Clinton email server probe.
Mr. Comey urged the agency to “continue to live our values and the mission of protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution” and said the FBI and its people need to be seen “as a rock of competence, honesty, and independence.”
He closed his note by telling his co-workers that “working with you has been one of the great joys of my life. Thank you for that gift.”
