BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana residents displaced by last year’s floods to hotels and motels are getting a few more days in those spaces.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Transitional Sheltering Assistance program has been extended by 20 days for residents participating in the program that covers housing costs.
The extension, announced Tuesday, marks the ninth one since the August 2016 flooding. The mid-August flooding killed 13 people and caused more than $8.7 billion in estimated damage, including an estimated 112,000 homes.
Eligible survivors may stay in participating hotels/motels through the night of Tuesday, May 30, but must check out by Wednesday, May 31.
The program is a short-term housing option, and FEMA says eligible survivors should be actively looking for a long-term housing solution.
