More than 200 immigrants, immigration advocates and leaders of labor unions and social and racial justice groups gathered on the steps of the Pennsylvania Capitol for a May Day demonstration.
Speakers at the rally Monday criticized President Donald Trump’s over his comments and policies on immigrants. They said imigrants help Americans prosper.
The Rev. Gregory Edwards of Allentown said Trump’s “Make American Great Again” slogan is code for “make America white again.”
Participants waved flags saying “We fight back.” One man held a sign saying, “Feds: stay out of my community.”
A 30-year-old Mexican woman who said she’s in the country illegally, and did not want to be identified, took part in the demonstration. She said she’s been in the U.S. over a decade and is increasingly worried about being deported.
She says her husband works while she raises her two children in York.

Public school teachers, immigration advocates and social and racial justice groups are taking to the streets in May Day demonstrations across the state.
Philadelphia’s teachers haven’t had a contract in four years and haven’t had a pay raise in five years. About 1,000 teachers took personal days on Monday to participate in the “Day of Action” which started at protests at schools, then a rally outside the district headquarters and a march to City Hall.
At City Hall, they were joined by an array of protesters including immigrant support groups and others seeking racial and social justice. Many were inspired to vent about President Donald Trump’s 101st day in office.
Signs included slogans like “Silence the Hate” showing a gagged Trump.
Similar groups are marching in Pennsylvania’s capitol and in Pittsburgh.
