LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Police in Maine say officers surrounded a motel for six hours before breaking down a door to find a man dead of an apparent suicide.

Police say they had arrived Sunday morning to check on a man at a Motel 6 in Lewiston when gunfire was heard inside the room. The motel was evacuated as local and state police surrounded the building.

After numerous failed attempts to communicate with the man, they used a battering ram to break the door.

The man was found dead of a gunshot wound. His name has not been released.
