PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine says a Trump administration plan to trim the Coast Guard and Federal Emergency Management Agency budgets are “illogical” and “reckless.”

Pingree made the statements on Thursday in response to reports that Trump’s budget proposal calls for a 14 percent cut to the Coast Guard and an 11 percent cut to FEMA.

Pingree says the Coast Guard is especially important to Maine because of the state’s marine industry. The Coast Guard serves as a first responder for fishermen and boaters who are in emergencies.

FEMA is also important to Maine because of the damage caused by major snow storms, she says.

Pingree is a member of the U.S. House appropriations committee. She says she’ll push back against the cuts if they come forward.
