PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A former cheerleading coach at a Maine high school has been arraigned on charges that he carried on a sexual relationship with a teenage student.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2m3qGPC ) Nicholas Perry did not enter a plea Wednesday during his arraignment on charges of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual touching.

Defense attorney Peter Rodway says the victim was 18 at the time of the alleged relationship. He declined to comment further.

Perry was charged under a provision barring sexual contact between school employees and anyone whom the employee may have instructional, supervisory or disciplinary authority.

Officials at Bonny Eagle High School in Standish contacted authorities after learning of the alleged contact between Perry and the student.

Perry was arrested in January, less than 24 hours after submitting his resignation.
