LEWES, Del. (AP) - A Lewes man has been arrested on a charge of driving under the influence for the third time.

According to a statement from the Delaware State Police, 59-year-old Dale Thaxton was driving a 2011 Kia Sorento at about 3 p.m. Tuesday near Lewes when he drove into a utility pole. Police say Thaxton was able to free his car from the wreckage.

Thaxton was still in his car when troopers arrived and allegedly drove directly at a trooper who was standing next to his patrol car. The trooper was uninjured.

Police say Thaxton fled to his home. The trooper caught up with him at the front door of his home, and a struggle ensued before Thaxton was arrested. He was charged with his third DUI offense.

It’s unclear if Thaxton has an attorney.
