MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and The Capital Times are being honored for their work using public records requests.
The newspapers are both the recipients of the “Open Records Scoop of the Year” award given annually by the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council. The Journal Sentinel was recognized for its work chronicling abuses at two juvenile state prisons. The Capital Times was honored for its reporting of dismal conditions at a state veterans facility in King, Wisconsin.
The awards announced Wednesday were among several bestowed on individuals and media organizations for promoting the free flow of information.
The honors are part of Sunshine Week, a national effort by news organizations and other groups that runs from March 12 to March 18 to promote open government.
