ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings for a 12-county area in western New York a week after severe weather knocked out power to tens of thousands of utility customers across the upstate region.

The warnings are in effect until 10 p.m. Wednesday in an area stretching from the state’s far southwest corner to Lake Ontario’s southern shoreline. Meteorologists say winds could gust to 60 mph to 70 mph in some places.

The weather service says a gust of 50 mph was recorded in Dunkirk in Chautauqua County.

The weather service says the high winds are accompanying the second of two cold fronts sweeping across the region Wednesday.

High winds were blamed for knocking out electricity service last Thursday to about 75,000 homes and businesses from Buffalo to the Hudson Valley.
