BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. John Bel Edwards sent President Donald Trump a list Wednesday of Louisiana’s high-priority coastal projects, for consideration as the White House pushes for new infrastructure projects.
The Democratic governor said the letter with details of the five projects responds to the GOP president’s request for ideas from governors.
Edwards said the coastal projects would help make Louisiana more resilient in disasters and bolster the nation’s economy by protecting energy production and other industries.
Coastal projects on Edwards’ list include two sediment diversion projects in Plaquemines Parish and a freshwater diversion project in St. John the Baptist and St. James parishes. Also included are a navigation canal project in Terrebonne Parish to reduce salt water intrusion, and salinity control measures for the Calcasieu Ship Channel.
Edwards said much of the financing already has been secured for the nearly $3 billion list of projects, largely through recovery dollars after the 2010 Gulf Coast oil spill. He’s asking Trump for “expediting the final hurdles of permitting and environmental review.”
