GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - A Grants Pass landmark is nearing a $5.3 million makeover.
The Daily Courier reports (https://is.gd/bR736Z ) the renovation of the Caveman Bridge will begin in September. An open house next week will highlight the planned improvements.
The state Department of Transportation says it will be the first major upgrade to Caveman Bridge since it opened in 1931. Though not in danger of collapse, the bridge is one of more than 400 in Oregon judged to be structurally deficient.
The Caveman is one of many Oregon bridges built by Conde McCullough in the first half of the 20th century.
The McCullough Bridge at North Bend, Yaquina Bay Bridge at Newport, and Siuslaw River Bridge at Florence are the most famous of McCullough’s bridges.
There are dozens of others, many on the coast.
