CLEVELAND (AP) - Akron’s Keith Dambrot and Zips center Isaiah Johnson are the Mid-American Conference’s coach and player of the year.
Dambrot led Akron to a 24-7 record in the regular season and the top seed in this week’s conference tournament. Dambrot notched his 400th career win and 300th at the school this season. This is the second straight year Dambrot has won the honor and third time overall.
Johnson averaged 16.2 points and made 63 percent of his shots while leading the Zips to consecutive MAC East titles. The 6-foot-10, 290-pounder nicknamed “Big Dog” scored in double digits in 13 of the past 14 games. He joins Romeo Travis as the only Akron players to win the award, which was voted on by a panel of 37 media members and the league’s 12 coaches.
