LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - Los Alamos County in northern New Mexico has instituted a hiring freeze while officials work out a proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
The Los Alamos Monitor reported (https://bit.ly/2lYD0S0) Monday the county won’t fill any vacant positions until May.
County spokeswoman Julie Habiger says there will be no hiring decisions until the county is more certain about funding prospects for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which is the area’s largest employer.
She says the laboratory’s tax and spending information will be a key component in finalizing the county budget.
The county website shows there are nine to 12 vacant jobs, including three firefighter positions, one police officer position, a detention officer and a dispatcher. The deputy county manager is also leaving for another job in Texas at the end of the month.
