CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, Va. (AP) - A plan to build a waterpark on Chincoteague Island is moving forward, despite some residents’ fears that the project would change the town’s landscape.

The Daily Times of Salisbury (https://delmarvane.ws/2n1StBH ) reports the Chincoteague Town Council voted 5-1 Monday to approve a conditional use permit for the waterpark at the 2.5-acre former Maddox Family Campground.

During the public hearing portion of the meeting, 10 residents either voiced concerns or spoke outright against the project. Three spoke in favor.

Councilwoman Denise Bowden said she had spoken to hundreds of residents since November, with the large majority being in support of the waterpark.

The project has been proposed by Blue Water Development Corporation from Berlin, Maryland. Blue Water owns properties up and down the Delmarva Peninsula, including the Commander Hotel in Ocean City.
