CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland-area transit authority is scheduled to resume bus traffic on the street dividing downtown’s Cleveland Public Square to avoid paying a $12 million penalty.
The square will open to Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority buses Monday, a day ahead the Federal Transit Administration’s deadline. Cleveland and the RTA sought to keep buses off the roadway after a $50 million redesign of the square was completed last summer.
RTA and Cleveland have been working on a plan to ensure the safety of bus passengers and pedestrians as Superior Avenue reopens to bus traffic.
The Federal Transit Authority said the failure to reopen Public Square would have breached RTA’s grant agreement that helped fund a bus line connecting the square with Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood.
