About two-thirds of Americans say a special prosecutor, as opposed to Congress, should investigate contacts between the Russians and Trump campaign associates, according to a CNN/ORC poll released Monday.

Sixty-five percent would rather see a special prosecutor handle such an investigation, compared to 32 percent who think Congress can handle it.

Eighty-two percent of Democrats said they support a special prosecutor, compared to 67 percent of independents and 43 percent of Republicans.

The House and Senate intelligence committees are looking into the matter. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a prominent Trump surrogate last year, announced last week that he would recuse himself from any investigations related to the presidential campaign.

Overall, 55 percent said they’re at least somewhat concerned about reports that people associated with the Trump campaign had contact with suspected Russian operatives last year.

Seventy-one percent of Democrats said they’re “very concerned,” while 54 percent of Republicans said they have no concerns about the reports.

President Trump’s approval rating ticked up 1 point in the poll to 45 percent, compared to 44 percent in a survey taken in late January and early February.

The new survey of 1,025 adults was conducted March 1-4 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
