The end has been brutal for Georgetown. It has lost five in a row and seven of eight. Two of those losses were to downtrodden DePaul and St. John’s. Second-ranked Villanova blew out the Hoyas in Verizon Center to close the regular season and show just how large the gap between the top of the Big East and the bottom is.
Georgetown is on pace to miss the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and third time in four years. The Hoyas have one NCAA Tournament win in the last eight seasons and are being chased by questions about the future of coach John Thompson III.
Record: 14-17
Path to the tournament: Win four games in four nights in the Big East Tournament in Madison Square Garden. To do so, Georgetown would have to beat St. John’s — which it split against this season — in New York. Then, the Hoyas would have to beat Villanova in the second round just to make the Big East Tournament semifinals.
Up next: Wednesday, March 8 vs. St. John’s, 7 p.m., Madison Square Garden, FS1
