STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) - David Nichols scored 19 points with 8 of 10 free throws, Devonte Campbell added 16 points with seven rebounds, and Albany beat Stony Brook 63-56 on Monday night to advance to the America East Tournament Championship.
Joe Cremo scored 13 points for the third-seeded Great Danes (21-12), who face top-seeded Vermont (28-5) in Saturday’s title round.
Albany led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but the No. 2 seed Seawolves twice closed to within two points, the last at 55-53 on Nyama’s free throw with 3:41 left, but got no closer. Albany scored five straight and led 60-53 with 29 seconds left and Nichols hit three free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal it.
Nichols’ jumper put Albany up for good, 24-22, amid a 12-2 run and the Great Danes led 32-24 at halftime.
Neither team shot better than 40 percent from the floor, but Albany made 21 of 25 free throws to the Seawolves’ 16 of 24.
Lucas Woodhouse scored 25 points with three 3-pointers and three assists for 158 on the season, tying the single-season record for Stony Brook (18-13).
