CANTON, Ga. (AP) - A Woodstock man is dead after a small plane he was piloting crashed near the Cherokee County airport.
Lt. Jay Baker tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (https://on-ajc.com/2mR9q1h ) that no one else was on board when the crash happened early Saturday. Baker identified the victim as 69-year-old Steven Silver.
Baker says officials believe Silver was trying to land the twin-engine Cessna 421. The crash brought down power lines and the plane ended up in a retention pond just east of the runway. The plane caught fire, but firefighters quickly extinguished the flames.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
It’s the second fatal plane crash at a regional airport within the past month. In February, two people were killed when a plane crashed at Barrow County airport.
