LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A man who was arrested in connection to the killing of a New Mexico police officer has pleaded guilty to a drug charge.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports (https://bit.ly/2nT1RKH ) that 45-year-old Tony Jones, of Hannibal, Missouri, pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of possession of methamphetamine in a Las Cruces court.

He was released from jail shortly after he entered his plea, as his sentence of 30 months in prison was suspended except for the 230 days he already served in jail.

Prosecutors say they expect Jones will be an important witness in the trial of 39-year-old Jesse Hanes, of Columbus, Ohio, who is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of Hatch police Officer Jose Chavez.

Jones was not charged in Chavez’s death.
