PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Officials say a high-pressure gas line ruptured in downtown Providence, closing both directions of Interstate 195, and the leak has been contained.

A National Grid spokeswoman says the leak occurred in a steel pipe around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday on National Grid property at Franklin Square, where the utility has a “take station.” A take station is where pressure is reduced from high-pressure gas so it can be routed to customers.

The leak led to the shutdown of a section of Allens Avenue. Officials say the rupture was caused by an equipment malfunction.

No injuries were reported.

Officials say there’s no more active leak from the ruptured pipe on Allens Avenue. That road and a few nearby streets remained closed as of Wednesday night, while I-195 reopened at 11 p.m.
