After directing much of his campaign ire at China, President Trump will hold his first face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week.
Mr. Trump will host the Chinese leader on Thursday and Friday at Mar-a-Lago, his resort and club in Palm Beach, Florida, that the president has been calling “the southern White House.”
The White House said Thursday that he two leaders will discuss “global, regional, and bilateral issues of mutual concern.”
The president and the first lady Melania Trump will also host President Xi and Madame Peng Liyuan at a dinner on the evening of April 6.
The meeting comes amid a broad range of urgent issues including trade, North Korea’s nuclear weapons program and territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
During the campaign, Mr. Trump accused China of unfair trade practices, including currency manipulation, and warned that he might impose higher taxes on Chinese imports.
Since his inauguration, Mr. Trump has taken a somewhat less antagonistic tone toward China. He is hoping to engage China more actively in pressuring North Korea over its nuclear weapons program.
