SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - Four of nine guards have returned to work after being suspended with pay at a northeastern Pennsylvania jail while officials investigation allegations that inmates were sexually abused.

Lackawanna county Warden Tim Betti tells the (Scranton) Times-Tribune (https://bit.ly/2m3eobh that the guards were cleared administratively on Thursday. Betti says there are some allegations he’s been able to disprove, while there are others where there’s no evidence, but questions remain.

The district attorney began investigating after a June lawsuit alleged several current and former guards harassed a female inmate. The lawsuit was amended to include three additional inmates. The DA has since referred the investigation to the state attorney general.

The warden has been conducting an “independent and parallel” investigation of the allegations.

The names of the suspended guards have not been released.
