SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.1 percent in January for the third month in a row.

The Department of Workforce Services on Friday released employment figures for January. The data show about 47,800 residents were jobless that month but looking for work.

Utah’s unemployment rate hasn’t changed since November, but the nationwide rate increased slightly to 4.8 percent from 4.6 percent.

State economist Carrie Mayne says Utah is beginning the year on strong economic footing.

The department says the largest private sector employment increases were in trade, transportation and utilities with 9,700 jobs, followed by education and health services with 6,600 jobs.
