MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A Minneapolis scrap metal company has agreed to pay $2.5 million and to move a metal shredder out of north Minneapolis to settle air pollution concerns.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said Friday that Northern Metal Recycling agreed to move the shredder to a non-metro location in 2019. Xcel Energy says Northern Metals will build a new facility on an industrial site in Becker.
As part of the settlement, Northern Metals agreed to pay a $1 million civil penalty and $600,000 to the city of Minneapolis to fund community health projects.
The MPCA had been trying to shut down the facility and revoke its permit. The agency alleged the business misled regulators and was putting high levels of metals into the air over Minneapolis’ north side.
MPCA Commissioner John Linc Stine says Northern Metals has made improvements and passed the emissions testing the agency wanted the company to complete, and is complying with its permit.
