SAN DIEGO (AP) - A Mexican drug cartel figure dubbed “The Engineer” for helping pioneer the use of large smuggling tunnels across the U.S. border has been sentenced in San Diego to federal prison.

The San Diego Union-Tribune (https://bit.ly/2m5y2W2 ) says Antonio Reynoso Gonzalez got an eight-year sentence Friday but will spend less than five years because of credit for time served.

Reynoso, who’s 72, was involved in a 1993 tunnel-building effort from Tijuana to Otay Mesa in San Diego, where he and his brothers had a warehouse.

He was among 23 people indicted for drug smuggling in 1995.

In a plea deal last year, Reynoso acknowledged leasing a Mexican warehouse used to store drugs and arranged for 858 pounds of cocaine to be shipped from Los Angeles to Chicago in 1994.
