PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The head of Providence’s city council says he wants a commission to come up with guidelines for socially responsible business practices for the city to use when deciding with whom to do business.

Council President Luis Aponte tells The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/2o6EEoY ) that staff is looking into how the panel would be set up. He wants to roll out the plan next month.

He says he wants suggestions and proposals on how to balance the city’s fiscal needs with a social conscience.

The City Council Ordinance Committee effectively killed a proposed law that urged officials not to do deal with banks that help fund the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.

Aponte promised to create the study commission and committee members have supported the idea.
