SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Hundreds of people gathered to protest the country’s top immigration enforcement official during a stop in Sacramento.

The Sacramento Bee reports (https://bit.ly/2njkTXq ) that Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Thomas Homan appeared at a public forum in Sacramento Tuesday, bringing crowds of people who are upset about the Trump administration’s stance on refugees and undocumented immigrants. This was Homan’s first public event since he was appointed.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and state Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León joined protesters outside the event condemning the administration’s policies with speeches, chants and songs.

The protest outside the event remained peaceful and law enforcement patrolled its perimeter on bikes and motorcycles. Inside the forum, some people booed and several protesters were escorted out after yelling at speakers.
